History of Community Involvement

As ANC Commissioner of 7E03 for 4 years, I served my constituents by bringing vibrant projects to the Benning Park and Marshall Heights communities, such as the newly renovated Woody Ward Recreation Center, formerly known as the Benning Park Recreation Center. As the mouthpiece and champion of this 11.2 million dollar project, I proposed that the Benning Park Rec Center be renovated and renamed to honor Woody Ward; a pillar in the Ward 7 community. Through collaborating with Mayor Bowser’s office, securing signatures on the petition, and testifying before City Council, this iconic project came to fruition. During my tenure as Chair of the 7E03 Commission, I led the presentation of the resolution and establishment of a partnership with H2 Design Build to build 15 new townhomes in Marshall Heights. The Fletcher Johnson Project has also been a huge focus for me which began during my tenure as ANC Commissioner. As a member of the Fletcher Johnson Taskforce, oversight of the project was transferred from the Deputy Mayor of Education to the Deputy Mayor of Economic Development. The land formerly known as The Fletcher Johnson Educational Center, will become Fletcher Johson at the Park; a booming development for townhomes, single family and senior homes, with a variety of amenities.

Even after I decided not to run for a 3rd term as ANC Commissioner for 7E03, I have continued to lead countless community engagement efforts such as my annual Toy Drive, my partnership with East River Family Strengthening Collaborative to provide fresh foods to the Marshall Heights Community, and my continued work with ANC 7E to plan and facilitate Public Safety Day. Most recently, I created Morehouse Day with the support of the Greater Washington DC Morehouse College Alumni Association to facilitate workshops at various schools in DCPS on the following topics: Books Over Bullets, Becoming a Morehouse Man, Starting Your Own Business, and Applying for Scholarships.
